How I Joined My First Board
While there is not a single path to board service, there are several steps you can take to become more successful in your pursuit of your first board.
 
Be present at our 3rd annual signature event and network with WCD members as they share their journey onto recent board assignments. The panel will highlight what worked for them individually and what are the critical activities you should be engaging in as you position yourself for your first board.
Opening Remarks: Susan C. Keating
Susan is the CEO of Women Corporate Directors (WCD), the world’s largest membership organization and community of women corporate board directors serving on more than 8,500 public and private boards around the world. Over the past 17 years, WCD has been instrumental in training women for board service, providing board opportunities, and facilitating introductions to nominating committee chairs around the world. The result has been the placement of over 500 women on corporate boards, private boards, and advisory boards. Susan will share her perspective on recent trends around board placement, California bill, WCD engagement and more.
 
Susan spent 29 years in financial services before moving into the nonprofit sector, serving as president and chief executive of Allfirst Financial, Inc., the 43rd largest U.S. bank, and the largest U.S. holding of Allied Irish Banks plc (AIB Group). Moderator: Debra A. Dandeneau
Debra A. Dandeneau is co-chair of Baker McKenzie's Global Restructuring and Insolvency Group and chair of its North America Banking & Finance Group. Her practice focuses on business reorganizations and debtor and creditors’ rights. Debra regularly advises boards and deals with a variety of entities experiencing financial distress, across a range of industries. Over the course of her career, her work has included representations in the real estate, manufacturing, power generation, healthcare, municipal, retail, and service sectors.
 
Debra has been ranked by The Best Lawyers in America 2011-2018 in the practice areas of Bankruptcy and Creditor-Debtor Rights/Insolvency and Reorganization Law, and Litigation-Bankruptcy. She has also been recognized by Legal 500 US for Municipal Bankruptcy and Super Lawyers 2006-2018 for Bankruptcy. Martine Reardon
Martine is the former CMO of Macy’s and is currently a member of the board of Empire Company Limited, Sobeys Inc, a $24 billion dollar grocery and pharmacy retailer that trades on the Canadian Stock Exchange. She is a strategic advisor to the National Retail Federation (NRF) and serves on the advisory boards of Scan & Style and Lumanu, Marketing Technology companies and Collette, a travel and Tour company. For more information, please click here.
Mei-Mei Tuan
Mei-Mei has been a director of both The Bancorp, Inc. and its U.S. subsidiary since 2013 and is also a board member of the Clara Maass Medical Center and its Foundation, and Montclair Kimberley Academy. Ms. Tuan is currently a Managing Director of Trewstar LLC, which provides corporate board services and is the co-founder and Chairman of Notch Partners LLC, a leading human capital partner to private equity funds. She was an investment banker with Goldman Sachs, BankAmerica and BankAustria and has served as Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer at the Sierra Foundation and the San Francisco Food Bank.
