The Impacts of California’s Mandate to Include Women on Boards
February 27, 2019, 5:30-8:00 p.m. PST
Perkins Coie
On September 30, 2018, California passed a law mandating the inclusion of women on certain public company boards. The first of its kind in the United States, the measure requires at least one female director on the board of each California-based public corporation by the end of next year. Companies would need up to three female directors by the end of 2021, depending on the number of board seats.
Betsy Berkhemer-Credaire, CEO of 2020 Women on
Boards and author of The Board Game: How Smart Women Become Corporate
Directors, initiated and led the team of National Association of Women Business
Owners – California which sponsored this initiative. She will provide us a behind the scenes look at how the bill came about, what it took to draft it, the process as it moved through the legislature and the efforts to garner support. She will be joined by governance expert Stewart Landefeld of Perkins Coie, who will discuss the potential legal challenges and implications for boards now and in the future. In addition, we plan to invite a number of current nominating and governance chairs to join roundtable discussions further exploring the effects of this landmark legislation.
