WCD Tampa is excited to feature two great speakers for a lively discussion of our local political scene and how it might impact 2020 and beyond.
Kathleen Shanahan is an influential Tampa business woman who correctly predicted Donald Trump’s win in early 2016, and was named by Newsmax as one of the 50 most influential Republican women. After earning a degree in biochemistry she worked as an elevator operator in the US Capitol and then became a staff assistant for President Reagan’s national security staff. She went on to work as chief of staff for Governor Jeb Bush and Vice President-elect Dick Cheney. Her day job is Co-CEO of Turtle & Hughes a 96-year-old woman-owned electrical distribution / supply chain management company. Previously, she was CEO of two Tampa based, national footprint companies in the environmental / soil foundation space. She currently serves on the GLDD (NYSE), Lumina Analytics, & PRISM boards. Kathleen will share observations about business, policy and politics.
Susan McManus, PhD, Distinguished University Professor Emerita, recently retired from a 30-year career at USF. She is one of the most widely quoted people on Florida politics in the country. From 1998 to 2015, she served as political analyst for WFLA News Channel 8 (Tampa’s NBC affiliate). Since 2016, she has been the political analyst for ABC Action News (Tampa’s ABC affiliate). MacManus has authored or co-authored numerous books, including Florida’s Minority Trailblazers: The Men and Women Who Changed the Face of Florida Government, Politics in Florida, Young v. Old: Generational Combat in the 21st Century? and Targeting Senior Voters. She will discuss the fast-changing demographics of Florida’s population, the political leanings of different segments, and why Florida is the nation’s premier swing state.
